many babies have birthmarks when they are born. Some birthmarks appear in the first few weeks of life. These marks can be red, pink, brown, tan or blue. There is no way to prevent birthmarks. They are not inherited, and very little is known about how they occur. Most are benign and fade in early childhood. Some birthmarks, however, may be more dramatic and cause cosmetic problems, or even be precursors to cancer.

There are two major categories of birthmarks: pigmented and red.

Red birthmarks can range from tiny, pink dots to large, deep-red marks. Red birthmarks are caused by blood vessels very close to the surface of the skin, and are also called vascular birthmarks. There are two types of vascular birthmarks: macular and hemangioma.

Macular birthmarks or stains are sometimes known as stork bites or angel's kisses. They are extremely common in newborns and are caused by capillaries (small blood vessels) that are visible through the skin. These tiny, pink marks are most often found on the forehead, eyelids and back of the neck. They require no treatment and usually fade as the baby grows.

Hemangiomas, known as strawberry birthmarks, are also very common. Most are small and harmless. The red color and slightly raised appearance are caused by a large number of blood vessels that are closely packed at the surface of the skin. They usually appear around the face, neck, scalp or chest, and are more common in females. Nearly all strawberry birthmarks disappear by age 9.
Larger hemangiomas are known as a cavernous hemangiomas. They appear as a red or blue mass of tissue filled with blood. Some of these lesions will disappear as a child grows.

The birthmark commonly known as a port-wine stain is a flat hemangioma or nevus flammeus. It occurs in 3 out of every 1,000 infants. Port-wine stains are purplish discolorations and are caused by dilated blood capillaries. Port-wine stains often occur on the face, and are usually permanent. Birthmarks are not usually treated medically, but large port-wine stains sometimes are. Aside from concealing cosmetics, treatment options include cryotherapy (freezing) surgery, surgical removal or laser surgery.

Pigmented birthmarks are areas of skin where the color is different from the color of the rest of the skin.
Commonly called café-au-lait (since they are usually light tan spots), these are normal birthmarks and are usually not indicative of other problems. However, if you have several café-au-lait spots that are larger than the size of an American quarter, they might indicate neurofibromatosis -- a genetic disease that causes abnormal cell growth of nerve tissues -- and should be examined by a doctor.

Sometimes, moles called nevi appear after birth, and they're no problem. But nevi that are present at birth could indicate an increased risk of skin cancer (melanoma), especially if the moles are very large. This is a type of birthmark that should be carefully observed over time by a doctor.

Children with darker skin coloration may have a birthmark called Mongolian spots. These are bluish spots, usually on the lower back or buttocks, that look like (and are sometimes mistaken for) bruises. They usually fade over time.

Birthmarks on the human face or body, usually classed medically as a benign form of nevus. Many superstitions exist about moles, and moleoscopy arose as a system of divination based on the position, character, and astrological connections of these markings. In folk belief, a mole on the throat was said to be a sign of good luck, but unlucky if located on the left side of the forehead near the hair. A mole on the chin, ear, or neck was said to indicate riches, but on the breast to signify poverty.

The position of moles on the various parts of the body had various meanings: On the feet and hands of a woman—many children; on the right arm and shoulder of a man or woman— great lechery; on the ankles or feet—modesty in men and courage in women; on or about the knees—riches and virtue; on a woman's left knee—many children; on the thighs—great poverty and unhappiness. An old folk rhyme from Nottingham-shire, England, indicated the belief that the position of a mole could affect rank in later life:

"I have a mole above my right eye, And shall be a lady before I die."
Another belief was that hairs growing out of moles portended good luck.

During the great witchcraft manias of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, such birthmarks as moles, as well as warts, were considered "devil's marks" if they did not bleed when pricked. Professional witch finders like the infamous Matthew Hopkins (died 1647) used pricking on suspected witches. Moles, warts, scars, or other birthmarks were pricked with a long pin; if there was no pain or bleeding, the suspect was claimed to be a witch. Special pricking tools like thin daggers were developed, and some enthusiastic witch prickers (who claimed a substantial fee for each convicted witch) even used trick pricking tools with a hollow shaft and retractable blade, to make sure that the suspect would feel no pain and there would be no bleeding.

Significance of shapes in Moles

The location of a mole, its size, shape and colour can be interpreted as indicators of your character, as well as generalities for the future. Twin moles could have yet another connotation.
Moleosophy, when co-related with interpretations of other psychic sciences, substantiates personality and character readings, and provides a complete view of the subject.
(a) Round: A round mole signifies the goodness in people.
(b) Oblong: An oblong mole depicts a modest share of acquired wealth.
(c) Angular: An angular mole suggests that the individual has both positive and negative characteristics.

Significance of Moles based on color
(a) Light Coloured Moles: Those who have light colored moles are considered lucky.
(b) Black Moles: This denotes that a person would have to surmount obstacles in order to achieve the desired results

1. Maharishi Parasara said. O Maitreya! Now I will describe to you the effects of
moles, marks, spots and signs, found on the body of women and men.
2-3. A mole, spot, or figure, formed by hair on the left side of a woman and right
side of a man is auspicious. If there is mole on the chest of a woman, she will be
fortunate. A woman, who has a red mark, like a mole etc., on her right breast,
begets many children and she is blessed with all kinds of enjoyments and
4. The woman, who has a red mark (mole) on her left breast, begets only one
5. The woman, who has a mole on her right breast, begets many daughters and
6. There will be gain, or acquisition of a kingdom, if there, as is a red mole etc. on
the forehead, or in the middle of (between) the eyebrows. The person will enjoy
sweetish preparations, if there is such a mark on the cheeks.
7-10. The woman, who has a red mark (mole etc.) on her nose, becomes consort
of a king. If the mark be blackish, the woman concerned becomes an adulteress,
or widow. All the marks below the navel are auspicious for both men and women.
If there be moles etc. on the ears, cheeks, or neck of a man, his first issue will be
male and he will enjoy good fortune and happiness. The man, who has moles
etc. in the thighs, suffers misery.
11. The woman, who has the sign of trident on her forehead, becomes a queen.
Such a mark on the forehead of a man makes him a king.
12. A right-turned circular hair formation on heart, navel, hands, right part of the
back and in the portion between sex organ and navel is auspicious. Left-turned
formation is inauspicious.
13-14. Such a hair formation on the waist and private parts proves inauspicious.
If such a formation be on the stomach, the woman concerned will become a

widow. If it be in the center of the back she will become an adulteress. It will be
inauspicious, if it be on the neck, forehead, or center of the head.
15. A man with indications of short life will get his longevity prolonged by
marrying a woman with auspicious, or lucky marks/symbols.

Melampus, On Moles

If the mark is on the forehead of a man he will be master of many men. And if on the forehead of a woman, the woman will reign, or be the greatest. If outside the eyebrow of a man, he will take a good and beautiful wife; if of a woman and her skin is ruddy, she will take a rich and handsome husband. But if it is upon the eyebrow of a man, one must not marry him, because he will be the husband of five wives. The same also for a woman. If it is on the nose of a man, and his skin is ruddy, he will be insatiate in lovemaking, also when she has a birthmark also upon the privates. If it is on the nose or the eye of a woman, the same will happen as with a man, this too when he has a birthmark on her privates. If upon the side of the nose of a man, he will go abroad from land to land. If upon a woman she will have smelly feet, this too when she has a birthmark on her privates. If upon the cheek of a man, he will be rich. Upon a women, if upon the lower portion of the jaw, she will be emotional, this too when she has one on her paunch. If upon the tongue of a man, he will take a rich and beautiful wife. If the mark is upon the lips of a man, he will be an overeater. The same applies to a woman. If a man has a mark on his chin (or wattles), he will be rich in gold and silver. The same also for a woman, when she has one on her spleen. If a man has one on his ear, he will be rich and respected. The same also for a woman, when she has a mark on her thigh. If a man has one on his throat, he will be very rich. The same also for a woman. If a man has it on the back of his throat, he will be beheaded. If upon the muscles of the loins, he will be a beggar and raise unlucky children. For a woman the same. If upon the shoulder, he will be bound and oppressed. If upon the arm-pit, he will take a rich and beautiful woman. And a woman likewise. If upon the hands, he will have many children. And the woman likewise. If upon the chest, he will be poor. And the woman likewise. If over the heart, he will be very miserable. But this will occur to a woman, when the mark is on her breast. If over the heart, he will be very miserable. But this will occur to a woman, when the mark is on her breast. If upon the arm-pit, he will take a rich and beautiful woman. And a woman likewise. If upon the belly, both will be gluttons. If on the spleen, emotional and sickly. If on the paunch, they will be emotional. If on the privates, they will be insatiate for lovemaking. If on the penis, while the man will be a bearer of male children, the woman will be the opposite. If on the thigh, they will be rich. If on the knees, he will take a rich wife. And if a woman, if on the left knee, she will be good, but and if on the right, she will be fruitful. If upon the ankle a man will get an unbeautiful wife who dresses well (??); but the woman, gets a husband of wealth (??). If they have a mark on the feet, they will be fruitful. So is the interpretation for men and women; if the mark is on the left side, they will be rich and good of all things; if on the right side, emotional and poor.
